iceclaw woke with a start, the pale light and crisp air blowing through the warriors den as a reminder of leaf fall and the grey tom could only huff angrily - although rookstar had passed away suddenly; he was still angry at the wise old cats memory for shoving her with an apprentice; even if he was a more tolerable young cat than most; in fact, he was growing to like the small black tom cat. he said nothing, didn't smile, didn't disobey - it was like mentoring a starclan cat, already perfect. at first, it made the senior warrior hesitant but he decided not to dwell on the toms lack of social conviction.
the grey cat got to his paw with a loud sigh before stepping over the mangle of limbs beneath his paws as he exited the den before making his way toward the apprentices'. it looked at though he was late - his eyes narrowed at sunpaw, spiderpaw and coalpaw sitting close to one another. his amber eyes narrowed as if daring one of them to acknowledge his late arrival as he stopped in front of the grey tom. he watched for a moment before his low voice rumbled, dark and threatening. "if you're quite finished, coalpaw. we'll go hunting near the thunderpath - perhaps these two apprentices' will find something useful to do in the mean time." and with that he turned tail and walked with uncomfortable as his old bones ached and cracked beneath his fur.
birds sang above them with tales of leaf fall, the leaves dancing around them until they hit the ground like coloured pencil shavings, the earth cold beneath his paws with each step he took while his tail waved to and fro with boredom. sometimes, teaching was a chore. actually, it was always a damn chore. he had only accepted coalpaw because rookstar had asked moons ago, a cat he was friends with - a favour if you will. he regretted it. now she was gone and he was still stuck with the black cat; it wasn't as though the grey tom hated him, he just hated teaching - he was actually quite fond of the cat trailing behind him.
"catch something and bring it back, i'm watching." he mewed in his usual gruff voice over his shoulder to the black tom cat before sitting down.

Coalpaw
Why couldn't these idiots just leave already? Could they not take a hint? And where in the world was his mentor! Or one of theirs. It didn't matter so long as he was away from these two idiotic apprentices, though he wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of moving. The large black tom contemplated biting the tortoiseshell she-cat or the ginger tom next to him, when movement caught his attention. There was a rustling of the warriors den, and his silver gaze was on it instantly. Iceclaw, a senior warrior and the young tom's mentor, stepped out. Coalpaw watched his mentor pad forward. The grey tom had his eyes narrowed as if daring any one of them to note his tartiness. Coalpaw might have since he was so irritated with the two imbeciles next to him, but decided not to comment since his mentor was thankfully taking him away from the other two apprentices.
"if you're quite finished, coalpaw. we'll go hunting near the thunderpath - perhaps these two apprentices' will find something useful to do in the mean time." Coalpaw narrowed his silver eyes at his mentor. A retort was on the tip of his tongue, but as usual, he swallowed it back. Instead he stood up and followed the old tom out of the camp. Most cats would probably notice and marvel at the beauty, but the black maine coon tom ignored it completely. The only thing he listened for was the sounds of prey. His mentor hadn't told him he could hunt along the way, so Coalpaw stayed his paw from attacking the prey that was nearby. Finally, they came closer to the Thunderpath. The smell and sound of it assaulted his nose and ears. Animals still stayed somewhat near the black road. They were used to the sounds and sometimes they even ventured near the road when a twoleg would throw something akin to food out of it's monster as it roared past, or the monsters would hit something but keep going without it's kill. Coalpaw knew he could often find scavenger birds near the Thunderpath, eating roadkill. He was thinking about that when Iceclaw's voice bit through his thoughts. "catch something and bring it back, i'm watching." Coalpaw didn't reply, rather he gave the old warrior a nod before moving off towards the Thunderpath. His mentor's tone didn't faze him, he was used to the tom's no nonsense tone and words. In fact, it even sometimes made him feel better after listening to moron apprentices all the time.
Over the sound of the monsters on the thunderpath, or during it's moments of silence, Coalpaw heard squawking from the direction of the asphalt path. To him they sounded like crows. They were wicked things that never forgot anything and would often attack cats if a cat had attacked them before. Coalpaw slipped forward quietly, hiding his large bulk in the shadows of the trees at the edge of the Thunderpath. His silver gaze searched and finally found what he was looking for. A monster had hit something, the apprentice wasn't sure what, and there were crows all over it. Some would fly up as a monster roared past or when another would get too close to it's area. They were fighting with one another as much as they were eating. Coalpaw was about to turn back. Those crows were scrawny and he'd rather not be one of their targets, but then he caught sight of one of the black birds. It's feathers seemed slightly different and it was much larger. The black tom crept around, trying to get a better look. It was quieter than the rest and the other crows left it alone for the most part. When he was able to see it better, he noticed everything about it was similar and yet also different than the crows. A story someone had once told him came back to him. It was about a raven and as he looked at this large bird, he realized this must be a raven. It would definitely feed a few of his clanmates and he was sure it would impress Iceclaw well enough if he came back with the large bird in tow.
Coalpaw also realized that the bird sort of reminded him of himself. It was large, black, and slightly different than the others around it. It seemed smarter and most of the crows kept a distance. Now, Coalpaw wasn't going to back off of this hunt, no he would go through with it, but he was interested in the raven. It wasn't every day he met a creature that reminded him of himself. The maine coon tom stalked forward, his gaze on the raven. It's back was to him and most of the crows were too worried about one another to be paying much attention to him. There was a break in the monsters, he could feel the rumbling die down beneath his paws, even from the several tail lengths away he was, and decided to take his chance. The large apprentice sprang forward, startling the crows. The raven started to lift it's wings, ready to take off, when Coalpaw landed on it. They rolled through the carcass, his claws were deep into the bird's back and wings. The two of them kept rolling as the raven fought back. It was trying to turn around and catch him with it's beak or talons. It finally did and the large black bird sank it's talons into Coalpaw's shoulder, ripping into it. Coalpaw's claws sliced through it's wing as they moved. He saw it's head snake around to attack him and used his now free paw to smack it away.
They rolled again until he was on top, and Coalpaw brought his front paw down, claws outstretched. His paw came down on the raven's neck with such force he was able to break it. The bird finally stopped fighting back and lay still. Coalpaw stepped away, crouching and panting. His shoulder burned and it hurt to put weight on his paw. Especially with such rough feeling ground beneath him. Coalpaw froze, realizing that what he was feeling beneath his paw pads, was the black tar of the thunderpath, and now it was vibrating. The large tom looked up and saw a monster's eyes in the distance. It was moving fast, but he was sure he could have enough time to get away. He took a step forward, intending on running back to Shadowclan's territory, but then stopped as he looked down at his kill. He wasn't going to leave it. He couldn't. Coalpaw wrapped his jaws around it and lifted. The bird was heavy and would slow him down, so he turned his head, got on his back paws, and flung the piece of prey to the edge of the road. He stumbled back after the weight left his maw, and landed on his side. Coalpaw scrambled to his paws, feeling his front leg give out on him, and stared wide eyed at the monster that was nearly upon him now.
The black apprentice jumped forward in fear, trying to get off the thunderpath. For a second he thought he had made it, but then he felt the monster hit his hind end and fling him farther down the thunderpath. A few seconds later, he left the monster's large black paw land on his hind legs. Coalpaw screeched out as his hind legs were crushed beneath the weight of the large beast. The hind paw of the monster ran over his hind legs as well, making him screech out again. He thought he was a goner, thought the monster or another one would finish the job, but after that it was all quiet. Coalpaw clenched his teeth and dug the claws of his front paws into the black path and drug himself forward, gasping out in pain when his back legs were drug along. Orange eyes were seen from the darkness behind a tree and Coalpaw called out for his mentor. Surely the older warrior would know what to do.
Coalpaw was finally able to get off the thunderpath with much struggle, but he was still on the gravel that was a buffer between the thunderpath and the grass. His raven was right next to him and he swore he saw a smug look it's it's dead eyes. Coalpaw coughed and pulled in a ragged breath as he lifted his head to look for his mentor again, only to find himself face to face with those golden eyes. They hadn't been his mentor's amber eyes, but rather the orange-brown gaze of a large red fox. It must have smelled the carrion of the carcass on the edge of the thunderpath and had come to steal a piece, but had heard him and come for him instead. The black tom hissed and swiped it it with his front paws, claws extended. A shock wave echoed through his body at that movement as it made his hind legs move. Spots danced before his vision and Coalpaw got the feeling he wouldn't be making it, whether or not Iceclaw was able to run the fox off before it killed him.

iceclaws amber gaze followed his apprentice briefly before slipping into the shadows of the undergrowth the lined shadowclans land. his paws light with each step, wide amber eyes glowing as he watched the darker tom slip out further forward to continue his hunt. iceclaw let him go without following; he was an older apprentice with more brains than most, he trusted the tom cat not to do anything too mouse-brained. in the mean time, iceclaw slipped away in the opposite direction when the wind dragged forth the powerful scent of a fox on shadowclan territory. he could feel his blood boil at the sheer knowledge of a trespasser.
through the undergrowth, against the tree until he reached a shadowed den, deep at dark that smelled as though something died. the old tom scrunched his nose up with a hiss of disdain, he'd have to tell rowanstar when he returned; after all, a fox would need to be tackled with more warriors than himself and his apprentice who wasn't even trained full in combat. he would return to coalpaw and they'd go back to camp for back up, as long as they were out here alone, they were in danger. iceclaw wouldn't be able to live with himself if the kit lost its life to a spineless beast because of iceclaws foolishness.
he was moving at a slow pace, his ears perked and eyes narrowed as he kept watch for the fox on his way back to coalpaw. the scent was still annoyingly strong - and recent. that's when he heard the screech from the thunderpath. he felt the vibrations beneath the earth before he heard the yelp for help. the senior toms tail lashed with anxiety before he bounded forward as quickly as his bones would allow until he came to the thunderpath. amber eyes widened in fear and worry for the black cat as he saw him lash out just before the fox seemed to rip through his fur with large pointed fangs. he could hear the crack of bones beneath the teeth, the legs twisted awkwardly behind him.
iceclaw was frozen for a moment, his eyes growing dark and mind blurring out with fury before he let out a loud screech of attack. the fox turned its dark gaze his way, it's mange ridden body approaching in a cat like stalk while his face far too similar to a dark altered. its nose pulled up slightly as he drew his lips back to display his red stained fangs with a growl. for some reason, the canine creature looked smug at its success in fighting an apprentice not yet trained in battle, with limbs mangled from some stupid decision he had made prior to the attack. he couldn't help but hiss loudly before pouncing.
claws raked with incredible precision down the side of the fox's orange pelt. he could feel the skin and fur crumple up under his claws as blood welled to the musical sound of a scream of pain; a deserved scream of pain. the foxes maw caught hold of his tail the stuck out behind him, flinging back and forth with irritation. he felt the pull of his spine as the vile beast drew him back with a yank of his neck. iceclaw lost his balance, falling to his side and easily maneuvering himself to his back to allow his hindquarters to slash at the beasts face to orchestrate a break in its grip. blood welled in his tail, while the fox's side was stained red, one eye shut tightly with a long claw mark illustrated neatly down the side of its face. iceclaw grinned with satisfaction as his work.
with a final leap forward, claws outstretched as he gripped the creatures shoulder blades with pointed claws, his teeth ripping through the skin until it met bone. then, snap. the break of the spine beneath his powerful maw was a satisfying defeat. he stepped back to watch with a glare as the body crumpled to the floor while the life drained from the beasts eyes, blood welling around its neck in a pool. iceclaw let out a harsh breath of exhaustion, his body moving numbly to coalpaws limp shape by the large black bird with ripped wings from his apprentices claws. iceclaw collapsed by the black shape, his nose buried deep into his fur.
"you're an idiot." he hissed, his voice cracking as he spoke with his eyes clamped shut tightly. he lifted a paw to place it on his hindquarters and immediately he felt the bones shift beneath his life touch. a completely shattered pelvis and broken legs, twisted and mangled to look disgusting by the handy work that could only be that of a monster. how was it that iceclaw had no been there for his apprentice. it was his fault and he knew it, he wouldn't deny that he left the cat alone in what he knew wasn't a safe place - he'll be hated, but nobody could hate him more than he hated himself in that moment. this cat, too young with so much potential to be brilliant. "i was going to request you be called coalblaze, for you passion and determination; may starclan guide your paws." he mewed softly into the fur. his voice more vulnerable that it had ever been in the public eye.
he stood slowly, gripping the scruff that was painted red with the kits own blood before he tossed the cat onto his back. his gaze dropped to the bird with a hint of pride in the cats final catch - coalpaw had obviously saved the catch before himself like a fool, and iceclaw was not about to allow the apprentices' last choice be left behind to rot. his maw gentle picked up the feathered rat, dragging the two weights with him slowly, his bones aching and creaking with each step. his will pushed him to camp, getting through the thorn barrier and collapsing with a wheeze of exhaustion. the black toms body limp on top of his own, the raven by his side.
with a nudge, he moved the apprentice from his back and looked at the cats in the clearing with a cold gaze, daring them to come near his apprentice. he got up with a huff and slowly moved to froststorms den, a loud yell from his maw erupted into the small space. "froststorm! get out here and look at coalpaw. he's dead, but you need to confirm it." he mewed harshly. he knew his words weren't nice, but from all the loss he's experienced in his life, iceclaw learned to push it away; to protect himself with a coat of iron and words that stabbed into anyone who questioned him.

Froststorm was in her den, organizing her herbs and berries and the such, knowing what needed to be thrown away and replaced and what she could keep. Doing this would take time, but at least right now, she has a lot she can keep, only some leaves needed to be replaces with some berries, but otherwise she was good. If she could find some catmint for the coming leaf-bare, that would be perfect. Froststorm lifts her head and looks towards her den entrance as she hears a cats laboring breath and smells blood. Somethings wrong...she thinks to herself as she moves towards her den entrance when she hears her name being called for. Rather a bit rudely but with the circumstance, she understands once she sees Coalpaw unmoving on the ground, a large bird too, along with Iceclaw's tail.
She doesn't even worry about gathering herbs or cobwebs right now, seeing as Coalpaw isn't breathing, is bloody, and Iceclaw already pronounced that he was dead. She would need something for Iceclaw later, but she would have him go to her den. Froststorm makes her way quickly over to Coalpaw to check herself and confirm Iceclaws words. He was right, Coalpaw was dead. From what she could tell, it was from bloodloss, claw marks and the crushed backend. She can smell thunderpath on the apprentice so she assumed that's what happened to his back legs and hips.
Looking at Iceclaw now she shakes her head. "You were right, Coalpaw is dead. I'm sorry Iceclaw." She rests her tail on his back lightly in conform before drawing it away, knowing his stance on this. She takes a step back and sighs. "I'll inform Rowanclaw of whats happened. I want to see you when I get back. Your tail needs looking at." She says to him, not taking no for an answer from him. She will see him either at her den or by Coalpaw, she isn't giving him much of a choice.

The sharp scent of blood hit Rowanclaw's nose almost immediately. He rose from his nest to see who it was & to check if they were alright. Rowanclaw noted that Froststorm was already on her way to fetch him. He flicked his ear in a sort of a greeting, he did not really feel like talking. The golden tom passed her & padded towards the bloody ball of fur that lie in the clearing. Rowanclaw could see that that the cat was not breathing, seeing as there was no rise & fall of the chest. Another death in ShadowClan... Rowanclaw went & sat by Iceclaw. He noted that the tom had a crestfallen look upon his face. Rowanclaw knew that Iceclaw did not want to be bothered at the moment. Despite this, Rowanclaw mewed gruffly, "How did this happen?"

frostedmints voice echoed in the back of his mind as his cold amber gaze rested on the black lump at his paws. his tail ached and yet he couldn't bring himself to care about it. it was his fault coalpaw had died; if he had truly been watching him he would have been able to stop the attack - stop the fool from being hit by a monster. then he felt anothers presence by his side, his head lifted to see rowanclaw and a scowl formed on his face as his eyes narrowed. this cat was not rookstar, and would never be her. iceclaw watched the deputy grow up from the moment he was born and he wasn't exactly impressed by his skills.
"how did this happen?" and all iceclaw could do in response was snort with disdain at the toms question. "you grace me with your presence, rowanclaw." he drawled slowly, his voice low and filled to the brim with sarcasm and disdain. "the lack of patrols has resulted in a fox taking shelter within our borders; i scented it on my travels with coalpaw and sent him hunting where the scent vanished. i went to find the den and alas, there was no fox. so of course, i went to go bring coalpaw back to camp but it appeared as though the fool had gotten himself hit by a monster hunting that giant bird. the fox just finished him off when i got there." he mewed bluntly in his normal voice, though his eyes were vacant at the loss. he seemed to bring such horrible luck to the young.
"don't worry about the fox, it's dead." he finished, getting up and turning tail, leaving his apprentice and rowanclaw in trade for the medicine cat den. he waited for froststorm, his tail limp behind him, the blood crusting over and matting in his long grey fur as he waited for her return.

Froststorm stops in her tracks when Rowanclaw just walks by her. Its understandable to want to know what happened right away, but she knows he has a voice and that it is working. She wont hold it against him though. This is special circumstances. Sighing silently she looks up at the sky for a moment before making her way towards Rowanclaw and Iceclaw. She stands towards the side, having already pronounced Coalpaw dead, she is just waiting for Iceclaw to go to her den so she can tend to him quickly. Iceclaw does need to sit vigil tonight with his apprentice, and anyone else who wants too. Listening to Iceclaws recount of what happened to Coalpaw, she frowns. It sounded like he was just giving a report of what happened, but hearing everything with who he is talking too, it sounds like Iceclaw was reprimanding their leaders decisions of not making the clan do patrols and such. He was right though. The clan was lacking in some patrols otherwise the fox would have been chased out before and perhaps Coalpaw could have lived. As an elder and unable to use his back legs, but a live none the less. She flicks her ears to get out of her thoughts as she watches Iceclaw go to her den. She gets up and stops by Rowanclaw on her way to her den. She speaks lowly to him. "Tonight we sit vigil for Coalpaw. Tomorrow we will go to the Moonstone for your name ceremony. You should gather the clan to tell them what happened and that we will be gone tomorrow." She doesn't say the last part as an order, but more of a suggestion so the clan doesn't start whispering and wonder what happened, plus the clan should know that their medicine cat and deputy will be leaving for the day. The first and second part that she says is an order of sorts. He will travel with her to Moonstone tomorrow after sitting Vigil for Coalpaw like tradition states.
She now makes her way towards her den and flicks her tail. "Alright Iceclaw. Lets see your tail." She tells him as she waits to see his tail so she knows exactly what she needs to get for him. "Are you hurt anywhere else?"

"You grace me with your presence, Rowanclaw."
At this, Rowanclaw's tail twitched in apparent anger. He did not like how Iceclaw was speaking to him. How dare he speak to me like that? Rowanclaw resisted the urge to rake his claws across this tom's face, just to teach him a lesson. Just because he is older than me means nothing...I am his deputy & soon to be leader. I will be respected. Rowancalw was so caught up in his anger that he did not catch the majority of what Iceclaw had just said. The part that he did catch, though, was when Iceclaw commented on the lack of patrols. Rowanclaw just snorted. He must not understand how hard it is to act as leader & deputy... He also noted that Iceclaw had mentioned that the fox that had been taking shelter within ShadowClan borders had been slain.
Soon after his speech, Iceclaw just got up & left without Rowanclaw getting a word in. In his absence came Froststorm. "Tonight we sit vigil for Coalpaw. Tomorrow we will go to the Moonstone for your name ceremony. You should gather the clan to tell them what happened and that we will be gone tomorrow." Rowanclaw nods as he watches her follow Iceclaw into her den, presumably to tend to his tail.
After Froststorm leaves, he does just as she suggests. The golden tom bounds up the smooth boulder that is used to for meetings, seemingly effortless. As he reached the top, he rang out the familiar call, "Let all cats old enough to hunt & fight in the shadows gather near Clanrock for a clan meeting!"

Spiderpaw Spiderpaw was sitting outside the apprentice den that evening. She remembered the morning quite well, she ending up waiting for her mentor that morning. Iceclaw appeared first and took Coalpaw out while Sunpaw and herself decided to relax a little bit before their busy day started. It was tough cause Iceclaw seemed to scold them for just sitting around but again she didn't want to miss her mentor. Luckily, her mentor came out and they went hunting training the rest of the day. As for Sunpaw she didn't know. But she was just in and had finished bringing prey to the elders and the nursery. It was her turn to the the nursery because well the kits get excited when anyone other than their mothers appear in the den. She and the other apprentice took turns doing that den. But now she was given the permission to eat.
Thats when she smelt the blood clearly. She looked towards the camp entrance too see Iceclaw finally coming in from his hunt. But what she noticed more was that Coalpaw was limp and looked dead on his back. She didn't know what happened and even though she didn't like Coalpaw all that much she wouldn't wish that he was dead. She noticed as Froststorm and Rowanclaw came up to the warrior and the apprentice. Spiderpaw couldn't seem much or hear what was going on but by the looks of it something was wrong. She just then watched as Iceclaw left leaving the deputy and medicine cat left standing with Coalpaw who was still laying on the ground in the middle of camp there. She noticed as the silver striped she-cat left and then Rowanclaw headed to the boulder that the clan meetings were held.
Thats when the simple words called the whole clan over for a meeting. The apprentice quickly gobbled down the rest of her supper and then padded over to the deputy. She sat down on the edge where the apprentices usually sat. She looked at Coalpaw noticing that his pelt wasn't moving with breath and that there was blood on his pelt. She knew right away that it was his and that he was dead. There was sadness in her body, Coalpaw wasn't a friend but he would have made a great warrior. But she turned and focused on Rowanclaw waiting for the rest of the clan to find their seats.

sunpaw had slipped away back into the den after his mentor never showed; coalpaw had left with iceclaw and spiderpaw was - well, she was somewhere. it was only when the stench of blood seemed to float through the camp, permeating the walls of the apprentice den did sunpaw finally slip out into the harsh light of day. his pelt was a stunning orange; his amber eyes scanning the scene when they fell on spiderpaw eating with her eyes placed on something in the center of camp. "hey spider-" he mewed, his head turning to the direction as his eyes fell on the limp shape of coalpaw placed in the center of camp.
the young apprentice stopped in his track before he bounded over to coalpaws shape, blood welling from his neck, back legs crush and twisted in the most horrible angle and his eyes shut. so lifeless. his chest didn't shift with breath, his ear didn't twitch at the sound of sunpaws paws. sunpaw and coalpaw may have spent most of their time annoying each other but the ginger and white cat had truly become quite fond of him. sunpaw was constantly trying to share his kindness with the black tom cat - and now it was too late and he could feel the regret bubbling deep in his stomach. the though, why didn't i spend more time with him, running through his mind on a loop.
amber eyes met iceclaws and his lips raised angrily; whatever had happened, happened on his watch, and it was his fault. his tail lashed as the grey tom was seen too by the medicine cat. he looked tired and weak and surprisingly, upset. iceclaws head was dropped down instead of held in a proud stance, his tail limp behind his body and matted with blood. perhaps, coalpaws death wasn't completely his fault. he tried to move the blame in his mind, that perhaps coalpaws death was just meant to be, it was starclans path for him and yet, it seemed far too cruel for a young cat to die in such a manner.
"let all cats old enough to hunt and fight in the shadows gather near clanrock for a clan meeting!", the familiar call caused his ears to twitch, his head to turn to gaze at their new leader. he slipped in beside spiderpaw, his pelt brushing against hers for comfort as he turned and gently pressed his nose into her shoulder blade. he had gotten on well with the she-cat and well, he needed the comfort of a friend in these times.
"are you hurt anywhere else?" the words caused iceclaws head to lift, his whole self felt numb - even if he was in pain, he couldn't feel it. "no, i'm fine. thank you froststorm; i do apologize for calling you so rudely earlier, even in a time of stress, it was no excuse to snap at you." he mewed softly before leaving the den. so unlike iceclaw to apologize and yet it was as though, coalpaws death had softened his hard edges. he sat beneath the clanrock, waiting for rowanclaw to speak.

Slatecall "Let all cats old enough to hunt and fight in the shadows gather near Clanrock for a clan meeting!" The grey tabby's ears perked at the sound of Rowanclaw's voice ringing through camp. Slatecall looked to his previous mentor, Yellowtail. After his hunting training session with Spiderpaw, he had come here to talk to the older tom. He wanted to make sure he was doing this right. The old tom had just chuckled, given him a few pointers (mostly telling him to follow his gut), and then switched topics to calm Slatecall down a little. The two toms ended up having a good chat when it had been interrupted by the deputy's gruff call. Slatecall knew some cats didn't really like the tom that was their deputy and soon to be leader, but Slatecall didn't really care all that much. Perhaps the golden tom's way of thinking would actually be a good thing for Shadowclan, at least for a while. Slatecall only hoped the warrior picked a cat for deputy that would help balance out his ideas. Slatecall shook his fur out to get rid of his thoughts, reminding himself that the older tom had called out for the clan to gather. He gave a short nod to the elder he was with, before squeezing out of the den. The scent of a cat's blood assaulted his nose instantly and he tensed, ready to fight to protect his clan. It took him a moment of looking around the camp to realize it was coming from an unmoving black mass of fur laying in the middle of camp. It took him a few moments longer as he padded forward slowly, to catch who's scent it was that was underneath that stench of blood, mixed with the vile reek of fox. Coalpaw, one of their few apprentices. Slatecall eyed the scrap of fur. The apprentice had been driven. The jury was out on whether that would have been a good thing or not in the end, but Slatecall was sure the young tom would have been a great asset for Shadowclan when he became a warrior, at least for a while. But now no one would ever know. The spotted tom's light green gaze shifted to the black apprentice's mentor, Iceclaw. There was a noticeable change in the old warrior. Slatecall sighed quietly. This tragedy would effect Shadowclan in a large way. He could feel it. Especially with no real leader right now. With that thought his pale eyes shifted up to look at Rowanclaw with his normally stony expression. He was wondering what the ginger tom would say. Instead of letting his mind run wild with possibilities, he stalked forward silently and sat a tail-length behind his apprentice, Spiderpaw, and another apprentice, Sunpaw. He wasn't really a naturally comforting cat, but he hoped his presence would at least help in some way. He felt bad for the two apprentices before him. The clan was low on young cats and it's size was just made smaller with the death of one of their own. Slatecall gazed at the two for a moment more before returning his gaze to his deputy, awaiting the announcement or announcements that were to come. Words || 550 Ooc || Sorry I haven't replied. I thought about a short post with Coal, either just before he died or in spirit form, then deicided against it and have now added Slate into the mix. =) Enjoy. x3 Tagged || tig || Kuwaki || Edda Rose || rain || Shadowclan

Froststorm gathers what she needs while he speaks of his injuries. She goes back to him while he apologizes and shakes her head, sitting at the den entrance so he cannot leave, like she knows some are fond of doing. "Your tone was understandable due to the circumstances. I accept your apology none the less. Now sit and let me work on your tail. You will have to be in here anyways if it gets worse and then you will act like a kit."
She grabs the goldenrod and cobwebs to help heal the wound and to help stop the bleeding. Well, so long as he doesn't try to get it off or do anything that would result in it. Once she is done she steps back and nods. "Ok, you come back to see me if something is wrong. Don't be tough and try to ride it out." Now she goes to sit at her spot under high rock where she spot is. She knows what is going to be said. Her mind takes her towards the trip a head tomorrow and the herbs she will need. Now to make sure Rowanclaw just listens and doesn't try to wander, on the off chance of course.

Rowanclaw shadowclan deputy Rowanclaw lashed his tail back & forth in excitement as he watched as cats piled in to hear him speak. The golden tom purred inwardly. Shadowclan would soon be his. Tomorrow, he & Froststorm would make the trip to moonstone to receive his lives. The large, golden tom could hardly wait!
When it seemed as if everyone was settled, Rowanclaw rose his tail to signal that he was ready to speak. He cleared his throat, "As you may have already noticed, a member of Shadowclan has joined the ranks of Starclan." He gestures to Coalpaw's mangled, bloody body. "Those who would like, shall hold vigil for Coalpaw until moonhigh. At moonhigh he will be removed from camp & buried properly." Rowanclaw scanned the crowd for their reactions to this. It was a tragedy that Coalpaw had died, but he was aware that the apprentice did not care for him much. Neither does his mentor... He thought to himself.
"Also," he began, "Froststorm & I will be leaving tomorrow at dawn to head to the moonstone. I will be receiving my lives & I shall return as Rowanstar." After he said this, he searched for Froststorm. When he spotted her, he gave a slight nod. Rowanclaw knew that some cats did not like him & that this may upset them, but that did not matter. Rowanclaw was to be their leader & no matter how much they disliked him, they were to respect him.
Rowanclaw then got up. "If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak with me at once." The golden tom flicked his tail to dismiss the clan before bounding back down the smooth boulder.

Spiderpaw Spiderpaw was looking at the limp black form of her denmate as Sunpaw approached. She looked at him his pelt living up to his name of course. It was a brilliant orange but then just as it was bright it seemed to flip in two seconds. Because he finally realized who was in the center of camp. Just like her he really didn't care for the tom but he was still a den mate and a clan mate and it would be weird without his serious loom over the den. She just then watches as the other apprentice her friend padded over to Coalpaw's body. She herself didn't go up to the body and she didn't plan on it until later to pay her last respects. But she wanted to see a ear twitch in Sunpaw's direction as Sunpaw came up but once again just another sign that he was really gone.
Thats when Sunpaw came back over and sat down by her. She didn't flinch away when her friend press his nose in her shoulder blade and she just looked at him from over her shoulder. She knew that he need her comfort right now and she took her tail and touched his back. She just said, "Don't worry Sunpaw, he hunts with Starclan now. Well maybe he actually battles with Starclan because I don't see him relaxing even joining all of our ancestors." She put on a small smile for the tom and then looked up she was glad that Sunpaw was here she need some comfort as well. But then her gaze landed on her new mentor Slatecall. She smiled shyly at him, she was glad that he was here too. It made her feel better to have her mentor and her friend near by.
That's when Rowanclaw decided to speak. He said some short words about Coalpaw then not a real surprise to anyone. Him and Froststorm were going to go to the moonstone. She wondered always what the moonstone looked like. But he was lucky enough to go and see the real deal. She just hoped that the deputy and the medicine cat traveled safely and didn't run into too much trouble with Windclan. She had never met a Windclan cat but she knew that the other clans just like their own didn't do well with trespassers. Once the golden tom got down from the boulder Spiderpaw looked at Sunpaw and said, "Should we share tongues with Coalpaw one last time?"

he wasn't listening, he could just about hear spiderpaws breathing with his nose buried in her fur. the deep rumble of rowanclaws voice was meer background noise. the last words the golden tom had spoken to the dead cat were teasing and almost cruel; himself and spiderpaw weren't exactly nice to coalpaw - not to say he didn't return their dissastisfaction with his constant silence and sharp responses. he felt guilty in a way but at the same time, he couldn't change his actions and it wasn't as though he had a cruel intent - right?
"should we share tongues with coalpaw one last time?" sunpaw lifted his head to look at the tortie with glassy eyes; "sure." he mewed softly, he could tell from her face that she too needed his comfort in the death of their den mate. he stood up, his fur brushing against hers as he walked toward the dead body. he sat beside him, his head resting on his paws with his nose a few hairs away while his eyes slowly shut as he tried to memorise the black toms scent.
iceclaw listened with irritation to their new leader. not only was his apprentice dead, but a cat he disliked was leading the claw. he lifted his lip in disgust; starclan wanted shadowclan to fail. iceclaw went to move to his apprentice, but the sight of his denmates by his side caused him to turn his back on the black tom, slipping away into the warriors den with a sigh of exhaustion.
