palestar had woken from her slumber with a jolt, it had been a moon since she had taken on stonepaw as her apprentice and part of her mind still wondered why she was even trying. this cat was blind, he would never be able to hunt fish for the clan, see enemies approaching the border, he'd struggled more than any other apprentice to become a warrior. something in palestar couldn't send a cat to the elders den from a young age, a cat who clearly wasn't destined for the path of medicine cat under eveningblaze's guide - no, he was destined to be a warrior. at least in palestars eyes, she was determined to make a warrior out of this cat even if it did cause her to come up with new techniques of training. every cat had advised against her taking him on as an apprentice, no other warrior was willing for an apprentice and even though palestar had been yearning for her own apprentice - she certainly hadn't been expecting this. pushing her body out of her den she pounced down into the clan clearing before poking her head through the apprentice den. "stonepaw?" she mewed softly, walking to his nest and prodding him gently in the side. "i'm waiting out side for you." and with that, the regal she-cat walked out of the den and sat in the clearing waiting for her apprentice, her tail coiling around her paws neatly. when he came out to her, she turned her head and before he could speak she began, "we'll continue with your training today, you'll be leading me to the river using your whiskers, nose and ears." she mewed softly her eyes fond as she looked at the smaller cat. "then, i'll hide, and you'll find me using your nose as quick as you can." she stood up, her tail uncoiling from around her paws and moving gently behind her rump in calm swift sways. "this will help you with your spacial awareness, we need you to use your other senses to learn the territory, especially by the river. you'll learn to swim properly when you learned every step of our land." she purred softly, padding away, "get something to eat and meet me outside the camp entrance." and with that she slipped through the reeds guarding the camp and waiting, sitting once more, her tail twitching patiently and eyes closed as she tried to imagine what she would find most helpful without her eyes.

... Mmmph. Stonepaw was aware of the material underneath of his back, paws slightly stretched out from his body, and the sunlight on his face. At least, the warmth hitting his face felt like sunlight. He rolled over, opening his eyes, futilely hoping that sight would return and his life would be normal. Nope. It's been a moon since he's been Palestar's apprentice, and he's still stressed out. He keeps brushing against the trees, and how could he hunt if he couldn't see where the mice or fish were? Maybe his sisters were right. Mosspaw's snoring hit his ears to his left, and he turned to face her slightly, head back down on his paws. Someone prodded him in the side, and he whipped his head around, sniffing- yep, Palestar. She told him about where she was going, and she padded out, clearly going through the entrance again. ...Huh. Stonepaw rose from his own bed, whiskers twitching, and followed the path Palestar made, making sure to memorize it. That was a bit easier than skimming the walls. How had he not...? Well, he knew now, but geez. He hoped Leafpaw wasn't watching him. Palestar spoke, and when she said to lead her to the river, he could feel himself growing nervous. This was going to be her idea of training, right? He could use his whiskers to get around, but ears? What could he do, hear reflections? He could hear her turn her head slightly, and she was looking at him. When she started to explain, his nervousness fell slightly, but it still remained. If he failed this, it would mean even more training on basic land tours that any sighted cat could do! Palestar left, and the bundle of nerves sighed, sniffing the air for the fresh kill pile. It was... over there, same place as always, and only some others were there. The tortoiseshell male sorted through the smells and picked out one of the ones he associated with 'fish', and chewed through it, reminding himself that he would need the energy to try and focus. Lead the leader around. She would warn him of trees, right? Stonepaw breathed in, out, and turned towards the reed guard where Palestar's scent was. After slipping through, he breathed in, trying to memorize the wilder scents. He was going to navigate it. Alone. When he had ran into a tree at first last week. Starclan, give him strength... the regal cat watched with a calm air as her apprentice slid through the reeds moment later. she watched curiously, she could feel his nerves almost as though they were radiating off of his fur. she brushed her fur against him before padding forward. "go on then, don't be nervous, you've walked this path many times this moon. i wouldn't assign this task to you if i didn't believe you couldn't succeed." she mewed softly, waiting for him to overtake her before padding forward after him silently, her paws silent with each step, every movement carefully chosen as she padded after her apprentice. "you know, there was an old saying that blind cats could see better than those with sight," she mewed softly, she wanted to see how he would work with a distraction. it would be perfectly silent in their land all the time, there will be a day where cats cry for help and prey screams out its warning calls to its kind. he needed to be able to adapt his senses to the new sounds. "i know it sounds foolish, how could a blind cat see? maybe you'll see starclan in your dreams someday and they'll tell you." she purred. even now as palestar walked alongside the blind apprentice she wasn't sure how to act around him. he had said nothing this morning, she could pin it all on nerves but part of her was concerned - if he doubted himself he wouldn't be able to carry out his tasks properly. and so she began again, "don't doubt your senses. you're without your eyes, your nose and ears will be heightened in their senses, feel the vibrations in the ground beneath your paws, allow your whiskers to sense whats close to you. trust yourself." she encouraged softly.

When he didn't first get a response, he sucked in a breath, paws shaking slightly beneath him. Palestar's scent and pawsteps got closer to him, and she whispered encouragement to him. He was still nervous about getting lost in his head, but perhaps... Stonepaw lifted up his head, and started to pad. He had taken this road before, but he remembered, by the few trees Riverclan had, that he could run into them at any time. Follow the scents.
When Palestar started talking, his mind started to divide itself, trying to pay attention to what she said, but he brushed by a small rock and snapped back to attention on the road, not really sure which direction to take now. After more encouragement from his leader and mentor, he started to smell. Sniff, he could smell a bit of the river, but it was probably just Mudfish's scent... sniff sniff... twitch his ears, try to balance it... That was both fish-like and a bit of the river's roar.
Padding forward some more, he kept the river's roar and scent in his mind, trying to convince himself this was it. "Are we near?" He asked, twitching his whiskers towards the scent of his mentor behind him.

as the regal she-cat padded behind her apprentice making one-sided conversation until he asked if they were near. with a glance around their location and a sniff of the air, catching the cool scent of the river. "mhm, just a few more steps, you're doing well." she purred softly, flicking him with her tail gently with pride in his success. as they drew closer to the river palestar called out once more, "we're here, wait a moment." she dropped her gaze to the river in case any fish were passing by, she wasn't entirely sure if he had eaten and she couldn't tell by his scent so close to the river. when nothing silver moved beneath the reflective water palestar sat back on her hindquarters, watching the river.
"take a break, rest for a few moments then come find me. you should know my scent by now, be careful." she mewed curtly before walking away, leaving her apprentice at the river and pouncing up into a tree with her claws digging in to the bark as she sat, watching him silently in wait for his next movement. she intended to make this slightly easier, she was going to make noise when he started moving, she would pounce downward with a loud thud, her paws crunching against every leaf as she left her scent behind her for her apprentice to track. she moved all the way to where she wanted him to go before returning to the trees and watching him in case he ran into any trouble, her claws gripping into the bark as she watched patiently.

Stonepaw straightened slightly, nodding. Rest. The tortoiseshell needed to loosen up slightly after focusing so much. He might not succeed on Palestar's scent tracking if he went after right away. The words of his two elder sisters haunted his mind, but he breathed in, then out. Her scent went to the right slightly from the river, but he couldn't sense much beyond that. He blinked his blind blue eyes, then decided he had enough of hearing the river's roar and the scent of water spraying up his nose. He got up, and turned around to pad after Palestar's scent.
Did she make this easier for him? Whatever the case, he walked after the scent, ears up for any loud, sudden noises, swerving around a few trees. He realized that he was whiskers away from said trees, and flicked his ears back in sudden embarrassment. Well, at least he knew they were there now so he could avoid them in the future. What if he had ran into them? Starclan, he got lucky, didn't he?
