☀ copperwing ☀
name: Copperkit - Copperpaw - Copperwing
gender: unknown (their body doesn’t show signs towards being either gender clearly and they don’t care about deciding whether they’re a male or female, so they go by they/them or any pronouns a cat would like to use)
age: 20 moons
clan: shadowclan
position: medicine cat
short description: Lanky, small dark tortoiseshell cat with green eyes.
appearance: Copperwing got their name from the beautiful orange-and-black butterfly frequently seen around Clan territory. They are quite confident that they look good, and cats that prefer svelte forms and long legs tend to readily agree. Their thick but short fur is marbled evenly between chocolate-brown and orange tabby. They have a bushy, ringed tail that’s a hint longer than usual. In build, Copperwing slightly resembles a WindClan cat but they and their family will state it as a coincidence. Their head is elegantly wedge-shaped, topped with larger-than-usual ears, and the rest of their body is very narrow and good at fitting into small spaces. Finally, their eyes are very round (but generally half-closed) and green. Copperwing has a good body for stealth and running, but their strength’s not the best around since they’re smaller than average.
personality:
They’re imaginative to the point of being confusing and generally try to be positive about things, but lately anxiety’s been putting a damper on that. It was always present since they were young, but since the major increase of stress on Copperwing’s mind, it’s been intensifying. Copperwing tends to be very competitive and dislikes seeing others trump them in anything at all. They set extremely high standards for themselves and only crack under the pressure set by themselves, not others. They don’t fear others’ judgment but instead fear objective failure. All in all, they seem to have boundless energy and are very high-strung on the inside but have learned to act a bit more mature lately.
Copperwing can be very narrow-minded when it comes to their work, not accepting advice from others easily when concentrating. Their incredible focus on medicine is helpful for healing, of course, but therapy’s a lot harder. They try their best to lend an ear for their Clanmates but their need to constantly be doing something tends to give off the impression they aren’t listening. However, their good memory for data on cats’ personalities and personal issues at least gives them the tools to be a good therapist. They’ve always had a tiny bit of a paternal instinct somewhere in them and wish they could act on it one day, but for now they’re content with healing the Clan. As a side note, they’re attracted to female cats and will sometimes have little crushes on she-cats, but so far they’ve been good at keeping it a secret.
They keep their close interactions to just a few cats and are often lost in their own little world, daydreaming frequently. With those special cats, their speaking style turns from quiet mumbling and stuttering to loud, expressive, and sometimes hard to understand. However, they like listening to stories from cats from many different walks of life and harbor a secret interest in psychology they’ve always pursued on their own. Obviously, they have a very primitive knowledge on it, but they are aware that there’s some illnesses to the mind that have to be fought without herbs.
history:
Copperkit was born to a litter of 2 in a prey-rich greenleaf, to a young mother and a father that was rather distant but still visited every once in a while. Most of Copperkit’s mother’s friends knew exactly what fate awaited them and their brother, and the medicine cat himself did as well to some degree.
Poor Copperkit had been destined to be a medicine cat apprentice since before her father was even born. See, her mother, Beestorm, had deeply wanted to be a medicine cat since she was young. However, she just wasn’t born at the right time-- a prodigy from another litter, later named Ryeleaf, snapped up the apprentice position and that was that. Beestorm climbed to the warrior ranking with one goal in mind: to have kits, and to make sure one of those kits became the next medicine cat apprentice, so she could at least say she gave birth to a medicine cat instead of being one. Beestorm had a hurried romance with a tom so she could have her litter, and as soon as Copperkit and their brother were born Beestorm was obsessing over getting them interested in healing.
Despite Beestorm’s best efforts, neither of the kits caught on very quickly to the idea of being medicine cat apprentice. As Copperkit discovered they were decently powerful and fast for their size through play-fights, they grew more and more happy with a future as a warrior apprentice. Their brother was sane enough to reject Beestorm’s persuading and show an obvious preference to his dad until she gave up on him and focused on Copperkit.
It wasn’t until Copperkit got a little cough and met Ryeleaf that they realized just what they were missing out on. Not only was Ryeleaf a gorgeous brown-tabby-and-white she-cat, she was also so gentle and compassionate and mature! Copperkit immediately thought she was better than any other cat in the Clan. Ryeleaf was still young, and the previous medicine cat had died of old age recently, so Copperkit began visiting Ryeleaf and asking her what herbs where which and how you made poultices and the like. The pair were fast friends and Copperkit couldn’t help but admit to themselves they had a bit of a crush on the other. When Ryeleaf (reluctantly) went to Beestorm to explain that Copperkit wanted to be her apprentice, Beestorm practically shot up 5 mouselengths into the air and joyfully yowled louder than a loner in heat. As soon as they were 6 moons old, Copperkit became ShadowClan’s medicine cat apprentice.
--Apprenticehood--
Copperpaw rarely went back to their mother during apprenticeship-- instead, their mother often came to them. They learned as much as they possibly could every day with Ryeleaf, meeting every cat in ShadowClan when they came in with wounds or sicknesses big or small. Ryeleaf also passed down the skill of being a decent fighter for a medicine cat to Copperpaw, assuring they could fight off anyone that tried to break the warrior code by attacking a medicine cat.
It took a couple of moons of normal apprenticeship for a major mission to be brought to the pair of medicine cats. A border skirmish had broken out on the ShadowClan-ThunderClan border, ending abruptly when a ShadowClan cat was bumped on the shoulder by a monster. The shoulder was broken and it was impossible to get the cat back, so Ryeleaf and Copperpaw traveled out to treat the cat at the border. Copperpaw realized they had a surprising tolerance for seeing wounds, what with all the scars their parents and mentor had. Ryeleaf let them take over and they deftly went through all the steps of treatment, gladly soaking up Ryeleaf’s approval. After that, Copperpaw began doing real jobs as a medicine cat and was a well-known face around camp, although many wondered just how mature the apprentice really was with their tendencies to half-ignore patients in their daydreaming and bounce around camp like a kit when there were no duties.
Throughout apprenticeship, Copperpaw remained close with her only brother, and would often practice warrior skills with him to burn off excess energy. Copperpaw never could keep focus long enough to become any sort of hunter, but they made a good fighter, especially in how they’d use feints and fake-outs frequently. Ryeleaf didn’t approve much of Copperpaw doing all this sparring as it distracted from her medicine cat training, but Copperpaw didn’t mind much and somehow kept up on both medicine cat duties and training. The only time Copperpaw’s flaws got a chance to shine through during their apprenticeship was when they were faced with a cat they couldn’t heal. With their sky-high expectations for themselves, including bringing cats back from the dead, they would become a ball of anxiety and nerves every time Ryeleaf and they lost a cat. Ryeleaf helped Copperpaw get out of these slumps by telling them she’d be here for a long while yet to help them out.
Not all promises can be kept, though. Not long after Copperpaw had just finished training and gotten the name of Copperwing, a fox attacked the nursery in the middle of a cold early newleaf night. Copperwing dashed in to fight off the fox, eager to try out their skills, but when the fox lashed out in a frenzy and nearly got its jaws around Copperwing’s throat, Ryeleaf managed to block the fox and lure it away from camp, telling the warriors she would handle this. Minutes later, when Ryeleaf came back, her shoulder was matted with blood from a bad bite. Copperwing, shocked at their mentor’s near-defeat, ran to Ryeleaf’s side and led her back to their den. They were about to begin helping clean the wound when Ryeleaf managed to tell them not to touch her.
“My mentor taught me about what happens when you’re bitten by a fox as wild as that. There’s no cure, Copperwing, and it spreads easily.”
Copperwing stared at her, dumbstruck. Ryeleaf took a few seconds to breathe before meowing that she hated to die after a relatively short time as medicine cat, but was confident that Copperwing would handle the medicine cat role well. In one of her last spoken sentences, Ryeleaf apologized to her apprentice for breaking her promise.
By the next day, Copperwing could understand this disease was fatal for Ryeleaf. She was more aggressive and unable to drink or eat, suffering seizures every few hours. Copperwing had to turn away Ryeleaf’s family when they asked to see her, knowing she could lash out and infect them at any time. When Ryeleaf put all her focus into nodding once after Copperwing gestured, with utmost reluctance, to their deathberries, the medicine cat apprentice’s heart sank. After they managed to work up the courage to feed their mentor the deathberries, they stayed by her side until she went to StarClan.
It’s been less than a moon since Ryeleaf passed away, and Copperwing’s not exactly looking forward to meeting the other medicine cats after this tragic event.
