Build: Ashsmoke was born a runt, but he became a huge gigantic cat with a very compact build. He has thick and shorter legs and very large paws, enabling him to walk on snow easily.
Fur: Ashsmoke has a very thick silvery grey fur with darker grey strips on his back and tail. His fur is also lighter grey on his chest and his belly. Ashsmoke has at least two more layers under his coat, and he would usually shed a lot in new-leaf and leaf-green.

Paws and Nose: Ashsmoke has a dark pink nose and dark pink paw pads.
PERSONALITY:
Crazy/Eccentric: In his clan mates eyes, Ashsmoke is a crazy cat who talks to himself. Of course, in his eyes he's just making small talk with Blueshadow. Blueshadow had caused Ashsmoke's sanity to take a fall because he knew what was going to happen to his Clanmates, and he just can't shake Blueshadow out of his head. He tends to stare at other cats and has a weird way of going around things. Ashsmoke barely talks to other cats in his clans, and most of his words are just jumbled up together. In one of his good spells when Blueshadow isn't there or gone, Ashsmoke is actually a nice cat to talk to, and he still has a okay sense of humor. But this would cause even more cats to stay away from him.
Quiet: Although he would sometimes mumble some weird words, Ashsmoke is actually a very quiet cat. He could sneak in and out from places without being detected at all, and he's a great listener. Most of the times while healing another cat, he would just quietly listen to them talk their pain out, ignore Blueshadow and just give them the herbs they need.
Antisocial/Cold: Ashsmoke never had friends when he was small, and his own sister had dumped him. He doesn't really have a close relationship with any other cat, and the only cat that would talk to him nicely is Blueshadow. Blueshadow had caused Ashsmoke to distance himself from most of the cats in his clan. When Blueshadow is there,he finds it hard to talk to other cats, and prefers to avoid them altogether.
Prodigy: Ashsmoke is actually a prodigy when he was small. He know things, he could easily learn things. It barely took Berryfoot a moon to teach him all the herbs that she knew. Ashsmoke also had warrior training when he was an apprentice, so he could easily navigate himself in a forest. Since he's also an older cat, he's smarter and very experienced in his ways as a medicine cat, although in his later years he ceased giving advice to younger cats.
Dedicated/Dutiful: Ashsmoke is actually very dedicated in being a medicine cat, and he would help all the cats that he can. He would usually try to ignore Blueshadow who would recite the cat's fate in front of him, and although usually Blueshadow is right, he still keeps trying.
HISTORY:
Ashkit barely survived. A small weak young kit, Ashkit was always smaller and slower compared to his sister Skykit back in their early days of being a kit. He was the last to open his eyes, and had caused the medicine cat so much trouble. But then again, out of the three kittens that Blackflower had given birth to, it was only Ashkit and Skykit who made it past their first week. Constantly sneezing and feverish, many cats feared that Ashkit wouldn’t make it through a moon, especially during the cold winds of leaf-fall. However, Ashkit pulled through. It took a moon for him to grow stronger, and bigger.
The nursery was full that time, and so it was not a surprising sight to see five or six kits running around the camp in a game of hide-and-seek, unaware of the dangers of leaf-bare. Unlike his sister Skykit however, Ashkit wasn’t a loud and rowdy kit who would join in the toss-the-moss games and just create chaos in the medicine cats den. Ashkit was quieter, keener on observing the other kittens than taking part in their games. Many of the other kits didn’t even talk to him, calling him an oddball. After all, even when Ashkit did join, he always ruins their fun. He can find them easily in a group hide-and-seek, and he would always somehow find the best hiding spots. Every other kit would always call Ashkit a cheater, against his protests.
“But Bluekit told me where to find you guys!” He would answer, and the other kits would crossly shake him off their game.
Bluekit had always been there ever since Ashkit was born, and was the only kitten who didn’t seem to mind his presence. Bluekit was an oddball too, according to Ashkit, at least. She had glowing fur which almost looked an indigo blue. She was a kind kit, a playful one too. She would always narrow her eyes every time he spotted her, and they could spend hours chatting. He even tried to introduce Bluekit and Skykit, when there came a point when he wondered why Bluekit never took a part in the games too, but Skykit told him that he was crazy.
After all, there was no Bluekit in the nursery, and it took a while for Ashkit to swallow that his only friend was probably a figment of his own imagination. It took convincing, both from his sister, peer pressure and his mother.
But he didn’t want to forget Bluekit, after all, she was his only playmate. Ashkit had nobody else. So Ashkit didn’t really care. Imagination or not, he wanted to play with Bluekit. Skykit was mean, anyways. She would boss him around, push him everywhere and treat him like dirt. Skykit also has a habit of pretending that she didn’t know him. Although it used to hurt, Ashkit grew immune to it immediately.
It even took longer for him to swallow the fact that Bluekit was in fact, his sibling who didn’t make it at birth. He didn’t get the information from his mother Blackflower, or his father Shorttail. The elders revealed it to him one day when they were all gathered in the den, and Skykit had innocently asked them about her existence to the world. Ashkit stormed out almost quickly as he came.
Finally, word had reached Berryfoot, the medicine cat that time, about Ashkit’s weird imaginations. Confronting him, Berryfoot made him reveal everything. Ashkit told her as honestly as he could, his eyes just locked into Bluekit’s blue eyes.
Berryfoot asked him, if he had seen any other cats like Bluekit. Ashkit shook his head, a little bit afraid. There was only Bluekit. Berryfoot then asked him if he wanted to be her apprentice. Ashkit stared at her in surprise, before looking towards Bluekit’s direction. He barely caught her shake of the head.
"Please, don't."
So Ashkit refused Berryfoot’s request. After all, Bluekit was his only friend, real or not real.
When he became an apprentice, turning into an Ashpaw, Bluekit who had asked Ashpaw to call her Bluepaw has been most of the source of his fun in his training. She would whisper to him things, on how Rabbitfoot had got a thorn deep inside his pad or how Briarpaw had fallen down the ravine.
When Bluepaw told him that Briarpaw was going to be attacked by a badger, Ashpaw told the clan deputy, thus managing to save the young cat’s life. Everyone was impressed. They wondered—how did Ashpaw know? Skypaw mostly left him alone now. She was padding after Hawkpaw, the resident tom. Ashpaw didn’t really like Hawkpaw, he was one of the main bullies when he was smaller.
Berryfoot asked him again after the Briarpaw incident, calling on his talent, and Ashpaw refused. This time, he finally asked Bluepaw why.
“Because medicine cats can’t have mates, and I really really like you, Ashpaw. Promise you’ll make me your mate?”
“Sure thing Bluepaw.”
Seven moon old Ashpaw didn’t really question this logic. He was after all, trying to aim to be a decent enough warrior, and Bluepaw was still his only friend. Like him, Bluepaw was growing too. She was now a beautiful blue-grey she-cat, with a lovely shimmering pelt and bright blue eyes that would always look at him with lots of love.
By this time, Ashpaw had already outgrown his sister, a ruff forming around his neck, and his shoulders becoming broader. Although he didn’t really noticed it at first, he was getting famous around the Clan.
When Ashpaw was nine moons old, another litter born after him was turn into apprentices. It didn’t take long for Ashpaw to become close with Cinderpaw, a lovely grey little tabby cat. She knew and they could talk about everything. They became best friends, and Ashpaw realized that he was in love with Cinderpaw almost quickly enough.
Bluepaw didn’t like it of course. She confronted Ashpaw quickly enough, when they were alone.
“But why Ashpaw?”
“Bluepaw, you’re like a sister to me. You are my sister.”
He would tell her.
“But—what’s wrong with me? Is there anything wrong with me? I’m pretty, I’m skilled, I could gain you popularity within your clan. Cinderpaw is just dumb, ugly and has no talent at all. You could use me, Ashpaw. I don’t mind, please, just think about it.”
Ashpaw shook his head crossly. Bluepaw was getting on his nerves. They started to argue.
“Go away, Bluepaw. All you do is make others wonder why I even talk to myself. I wish you weren’t there, just go away from my head.”
"You'll regret this, Ashpaw."
And he just left her there, alone. Ashpaw didn’t saw Bluepaw for quite a while. He assumed that she was sulking out there, like she would sometimes do when the game gets too rough. That was when he was alone with Cinderpaw, when he saw her again. But her eyes were no longer bright and loving. They were dull, full of anger. When Ashpaw glanced over Cinderpaw’s shoulder to look at Bluepaw, he realized that she was smiling.
“Ashpaw~” She was crooning.
That was when the fox burst through the trees.
Ashpaw made it, Cinderpaw didn’t.
He barely survived it himself, and when he laid in Berryfoot's nursery, there were long stretches when it was just him, and Bluepaw.
"Go away. You sent that fox on Cinderpaw, didn't you?"
"I can't Ashpaw, I decided. I love you, and I'm not going away forever. You're mine. I won't share you with no one else."
She was nicer now, and although no one else can see her, she was constantly asking what he needed. Ashpaw wanted to ignore her, to block her out. But she wouldn't. stop. talking.
When Berryfoot asked him for the third time to be her apprentice, Ashpaw accepted. Out of spite for Bluepaw. He wanted her to disappear. Her presence was driving him mad.
"Ashpaw why? Why?"
"I did this because I want to."
"I love you Ashpaw, you know that don't you?"
"Yeah, yeah. I do know that."
It was as if Ashpaw's world had fallen into black and white where it was only him and Bluepaw. It didn't mean that Ashpaw wasn't a bad medicine cat--he was a fast learner, and he could quickly memorize the herbs and remedies. Berryfoot would always remark that he was a natural in it. Bluepaw never stopped giving Ashpaw his feed. It was like she was punishing him, forcing him to know the things inside the clan. She would come up to him and whisper, that Briarpaw will die because a fox would reach her, and that he would be too late to help. Ashpaw naturally tried to alert the deputy again, but when they reached Briarpaw, she was simply just a slain corpse, the scent of fox reeking everywhere.
"You sent that fox, didn't you?"
"I didn't, Ashpaw."
"I don't believe you."
"Suit yourself. Oh by the way, there's a thorn in Skypaw's paw, and she'll come limping back to you soon, so in a meantime you got to be ready."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"I want to support you, Ashpaw. You became a medicine cat, but I will still love you, and a good mate will always support her mate."
"You're not my mate."
"But then you don't have anyone else."
When Berryfoot died in a bought of greencough, Ashpaw became Ashsmoke. He felt lonely when Berryfoot died. The medicine cat was always kind to him. He was at least twenty moons by then, and had grown into a handsome tom. But below his beautiful appearance, his eyes would always have a strange haunted look, and many cats would say that they would catch him talking to himself.
Skypaw had become Skyfall, and she had taken in Hawkclaw as a mate. Skyfall had basically disowned him already, and it was not like Ashsmoke died. They lost a lot of cats that leaf-bare, due to greencough and starvation, Ashsmoke's mother Blackflower being one of them. Bluepaw--now calling herself Blueshadow, would soot Ashsmoke through his grief, telling him that yes, Blackflower was safe in Starclan.
Ashsmoke went through many seasons within the clan, doing his best as a medicine cat. Blueshadow was like a ghost to him now, and he would see her everywhere. He wanted her to go, disappear and leave him alone, the memory of Cinderpaw still fresh in his mind, but at the same time, Blueshadow was his only friend. He needed Blueshadow in some kind of level. His clanmates were starting to avoid him, only coming to him for his injuries. Of course, as a medicine cat he had to be in a close relationship with the leader of the clan, but unless its important, Ashsmoke didn't really talk to the clan leader.
Whenever he would come with the other medicine cats for the half-moon meeting, and meet with Starclan, most of his meetings were blurry, and would only consist of Blackflower and Berryfoot looking at him pitifully. He would chat with them sometimes, small talk, and they would tell him some prophecies. But all the same, he never saw Blueshadow walking in Starclan. He decided that he didn't want to question anything anymore.
Skyfall had given birth to Hawkclaw's kits in a litter of four, and Ashsmoke helped her through the kitting. He watched Blueshadow carefully, knowing that Skyfall should generally be Blueshadow's kin too.
"I'm going to punish her, Ashsmoke."
"Why? She did nothing wrong. Blueshadow, shut up."
"She could have been the sister you wanted."
"Don't take out your anger on her, Blueshadow."
Blueshadow was gone. And almost immediately, he could hear Skyfall's wails from his medicine den. Rosekit was dead. Ashsmoke could only shake his head in dispair.
"I'm sorry Skyfall." He told his sister.
"What for?" In her grieve, Skyfall had resorted to shaking her dead kit in an attempt to wake her up.
"Blueshadow did this."
"Go away." Skyfall's words were filled with hostility as she fixed Ashsmoke an angry stare. "Just so away, you crazy stupid cat!"
And so Ashsmoke left.
When Fernkit was born, Blueshadow told him that Fernkit was going to be the next medicine cat. But Fernkit would disappear one day, never to come back to the Clan. Ashsmoke didn't want to believe Blueshadow. He was at least fourty two moons old when Fernpaw was apprenticed to him. She was a great apprentice, a gentle and a beautiful medicine cat. Ashsmoke was sure that he could trust the clan to her when he retired.
"Ashsmoke, remember what I told you?"
"Blueshadow, not now."
"Don't get too attached."
"I know."
"You're getting attached to her."
"I'm her mentor, for Starclan's sake!"
"I don't want you to be sad when she disappears, Ashsmoke."
What Blueshadow told him proved through when the young cat disappeared, almost at the same time Ashshadow was about to announce his retirement. Although he was still younger than the senior warriors, Blueshadow had by then almost taken over him. His fur would be matted, and his eyes were hollow and empty at most times when he would gaze at a cat. His talks with Blueshadow were becoming more public, and he could see Blueshadow in the eyes of every cat. He became more jumpy, more aggressive, more fearful. Ferndapple's disappearance gave Ashsmoke a huge dip in his sanity.
"I need to find another apprentice."
"There's no cat at the moment, Ashshadow."
"Blueshadow, you're not real."
"But I can help you."
"Blueshadow, why?"
It was more of a statement.
Ashsmoke just closed his eyes, knowing that he just had to listen to her.
Notes: Actually, Ashshadow is schizophrenic. Blueshadow was just a figment of his imagination. Starclan knows this but they decided to keep it a secret. Bluekit is actually safe in Starclan, watching over her brother with worry. Everything else she said that came true was because he's a gifted kitty.
