riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputyafter the grand fiasco in camp a cause to her return, zinnianose decided she needed a breath of fresh air. the camp was claustrophobic and full of too many cats with their eyes all on her. she couldn't handle so much attention after her first full day back in camp. already, the deputy was finding herself needing a break from her clanmates. how pathetic, she thought idly as she ran. eventually, her legs were aching and her chest was tight. she couldn't bring herself to run anymore. zinnianose stopped, her throat feeling dry and skin still burning from humiliation. she coughed and coughed and coughed, feeling like she was about to make bile - but nothing came up. she hadn't eaten yet that morning, and her energy was low. instead of running, the she-cat resumed the pace of a walk.
zinnianose found herself coming to druids' leap. her mouth suddenly felt even drier than before, so she drew close to the river. luckily it hadn't quite frozen over. she lingered on the edge and lapped at the water, the icy cold liquid feeling amazing on her tongue, her body hot and overworked from sprinting out of camp on such low energy. she drank her fill then pulled away from the edge, quietly wandering over to the twoleg bridge. her paws went from soft thumps on the grass to quiet taps on the stone twoleg bridge. she leapt up onto the wall of the twoleg bridge, the flat surface barely enough for her to sit on comfortably. she looked down into the water, golden eyes falling upon her reflection.
the first thing she noticed was how dark her eyes looked. how tired her face was. how worn out her expression was. it was all complete to how she felt - worn, tired, helpless. the next thing that she could pick out was her thin frame. her fur barely clung to her skin, leaving her small and skinny looking. she didn't look anything like a true riverclan warrior. her pelt was still somewhat dirty, rather than the sheen, glossy look she adored to have, despite how many baths she'd taken. zinnianose looked nothing like zinnianose. she could barely even recognize herself.
after everything you've been through, she told herself, you're still here. you made it. you found your way back to riverclan. the riverclan deputy barely managed a smile, her teeth poking out from underneath her maw. her tail flicked, curling around herself and covering up her paws as they began to become cold from the stone and the temperature of the air. zinnianose hung her head, sighing. you're still you.

Quickriver Hunting was not good today so far. It had been freezing out already this morning, which felt strange even though it was leafbare because lately it had been pretty warm out. And no, or hardly any, snow up to now. She was young but she could pick up on how strange it was for this time of year. So far, Quickriver had only been able to catch a water vole. A thin one. And since it didn't have a tail, probably an escapee from someone else's hunt, she had to carry it full on in her mouth, rather than carrying it by it's tail. If this was greenleaf, or even newleaf, she would have had better luck. Especially since she'd been out her for a while. After saying a hello to Zinnianose, she had left the camp because the crowd had gotten bigger. And Ripplepaw's constant yapping had given her a headache. The small warrior had first tried near the River at the Thunderclan border, but kept a distance away. There it was mostly marshlands and she was lucky enough to catch the water vole, but she hadn't seen anything else scurrying about. So she decided that while the day was still young, she would try near Druid's Leap. As far as she knew, the land over there was hunted nearly as often because of the dirt Thunderpath that lead to Morgan's Farm. Perhaps if the clan truly became desperate enough, they might try for the rats that hung out at the farm, but Quickriver didn't believe that would happen. At least she'd only heard stories of that happening, but those were just stories. As far as she knew, none of the cats alive in Riverclan had seen that happen. And so, Quickriver decided to carry the water vole along with her. While the scent of it would dull her senses, she didn't want to have to trek all the way back just to collect it. Instead, she would leave it somewhere close by before continuing to hunt. If she found nothing else, she'd try at fishing, even though the water was ice cold. The bronze tabby padded forward, eyes sharp and ears keen. Should she leave the vole before or after the dirt Thunderpath? Probably after so it would be easier to collect. At least that is what she would do unless she saw or heard something before then. Because of the water vole in her maw, she wasn't able to pick up any scents other than the ones from the prey she was carrying. Which meant she didn't catch Zinnianose's scent as she padded along. But she became on high alert when she spotted a form sitting on the bridge across the water. Was it a rogue? She was too far away to make out a clear image, especially of it's fur. Was it a brown tabby? As she cautiously stepped closer, she was able to make the feline out a little more clearly but still wasn't able to tell who it was by sight. Pausing, she dropped the piece of prey and glanced around in case it was a rogue and there were more of them. Stepping forward, it was a few tail lengths before she was able to smell anything other than the prey she had been carrying, and she recognized the cat's scent the same moment she recognized the pelt. After all, she had just seen the cat earlier. Her ears pressed against her head as she wondered what to do. Zinnianose being nice earlier could have just of been a fluke. And if she was out her by herself, even without Palestar, she probably wanted to be left alone. But despite all the reasons to stay away and the few to go, Quickriver's paws still slowly moved her forward. She was a clanmate and, even if the other she-cat didn't like her much normally, it was still probably the right thing to do to see if the deputy needed anything. Plus, she hadn't been there for Palestar's little speech, so she didn't know she should keep away from the pale she-cat. It was an effort to bring her ears forward so she didn't show how much she didn't like doing this, but it was obvious in the way she padded forward quietly and sat down next to the ginger and white warrior, tilted slightly away. "You're not thinking of jumping in, are you?" Now Quickriver is a serious cat, and while she made an effort to make a joke, it sounded more like an accusation than the joke she had intended. Her tone even made her ears pin down and she cursed herself silently. Surely now the other she-cat would growl, give her a cuff over the ears or something worse, and send her on her way. Quickriver didn't really blame her though. She had probably just interrupted her quiet, thinking time. Quick more than likely would do the same exact thing. riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputyzinnianose was soon having a silent staring contest with herself, delving deep into her thoughts. the world around her became muted in color and sound as she pictured herself back at the twoleg-place. rogues and loners had always been an occasion around the borders, but they had never been too big of a threat. in the twoleg-place, it was different. that was their home, the place they were familiar with, and she was the outsider. she could recall the very few cats that showed her mercy, that helped her find her way out... begrudgingly and unkindly, at least. "you mouse-brained clanbloods couldn't survive in a twoleg-place even if it meant saving your entire clan. you're better off getting out of here so that you're not in our damn way, you fox-hearted molly."
her gaze at herself was cold, her entire body sparking with tension. when she saw herself, she saw emptiness in her eyes. zinnianose closed her eyes, unable to face herself, what a coward you are, the tip of her tail flickering. she was too deep into her mind to realize that quickriver had approached her, didn't hear the sound of her coming nor the scent of the she-cat drifting closer. she hadn't even noticed when quickriver joined her at her side! by the time the she-cat spoke, "you're not thinking of jumping in, are you?", she barely had time to register her voice before she flinched, all of her hairs raising. the riverclan deputy snapped her head towards her, eyes flying open. just like in camp, her pupils dilated, and she was about to draw back her lips in a snarl, but stopped herself as the small, golden-brown figure of quickriver made itself familiar to her. the tension in her body held for just a moment, then released. she practically seemed to melt with the way she loosened up, her fur lying flat, ears pinning themselves against her head. she glanced back down to the water, biting back a soft whimper, the only noise escaping her a pained laugh. "no," said the she-cat shakily. "i would never dream of it. i - sorry. you - you scared me. i thought..." she trailed off, shaking her head. zinnianose watched quickriver's reflection next to her own, the ripples of the water making both of their figures seem to quiver. the deputy fell fatally silent, swallowing roughly. it was her stomach growling that broke the silence, and then she added, "nevermind."ooc: / tag: Minteh Freshness

Quickriver Quickriver had been tilted away slightly from the other she-cat and was steadily cursing herself in her thoughts, so she hadn't noticed Zinnianose's fur fluffing up. But she had noticed movement in their reflections on the water below, that made her head turn. The golden brown she-cat flinched back, expecting claws to fly at her face, or teeth to rip at her shoulder or neck. Her own fur started to rise until nothing happened. Then she cursed herself silently again for expecting the worst. She had probably just started the deputy and made the ginger and white warrior think she was a rogue or something. Her fault. Always her fault. She opened up her bronzed eyes, as they had squeezed shut with her flinch, and saw that Zinnianose was pulling away, seeming to become almost a whole other cat than the ready to attack one she had just seen. Her ears flicked at the sound of Zinnianose's laugh and it made her wrap her tail around her paws even tighter. "no, i would never dream of it. i - sorry. you - you scared me. i thought... This was definitely not the warrior she-cat that had been Zinnianose before she disappeared. Everything about her was...different. There was silence between the two until a growl sounded in the air, making Quickriver jump until she realized it was the other warrior's stomach. "nevermind."Her ears flicked back for a second or two. What should she do? She was no good at being around others, let alone comforting someone else. Her attempt at joking had failed, what was to say any other tries at anything else would fail too? Quickriver gazed at Riverclan's returned deputy, finding it hard not to see every bone on the she-cat's body, and remembered her stomach growling. The tip of her tail twitched as she glanced back the way she had come. Without saying a word, the she-cat stood up and padded off of the strange feeling of the twoleg made bridge, and then ran. She didn't have to go far, thankfully, but it still felt like she was gone for a long time, as if the other she-cat would just blow away in the wind as if she had never been there. As if she had never come back to the clan. A tension in her shoulders loosened slightly when she turned back and saw the ginger shape of her clanmate, right where she left her. Quickriver padded back, not quite as fast now. Quickriver set the water vole down near Zinnianose's paws and then sat down in her previous spot, her head and body turned away slightly. "Eat. And then I want to take you somewhere." She hoped that the other she-cat would feel better. She glanced out of the corner of her eye at the older warrior. "And don't argue. I'll catch more before going back to camp."Words || 499 Ooc || --- Tagged || iero

riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputythe deputy couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt strike her heart as she saw quickriver respond to her somewhat hostile reaction to her approach, looking fearful as she caught movement in the corner of her eye, watched her expression in their reflections of the water. nothing had been right in the twoleg-place - every cat was distrusting of another. it was every cat for themself. even - even kittypets seemed to be territorial and hostile, harsh and unkind. they were supposed to be minnow-brained softies, she reminded herself with a twisted feeling burning in her chest. she didn't catch a reply from quickriver, but she watched her figure in the water disappear from her side. it wasn't an expected move, but not unexpected, either. zinnianose was not being herself. she wouldn't want to be around her, either, if she had the choice. i must look a state. must be such a mess. looking like a walking disaster. seeking pity. i don't want pity. i just... i want to be back in riverclan. before all this.
zinnianose was beginning to get lost in her thoughts again, just grazing the edge of dissociation, until suddenly quickriver was back at her side. the scent of fresh-kill flooded her nostrils, hit her in an overwhelming wave. her mouth seemed to water as soon as it came under her detection, and as she looked down at her paws, she could see a water vole. she lifted her gaze to quickriver, a silent thanks clear in her expression, in her eyes. she would have spoken, but the flattery, the compassion she felt from such a kind move - idiot, this is what clanmates do for each other, remember? - left her silent. "eat. and then i want to take you somewhere," zinnianose opened her mouth to protest, but then, "and don't argue. i'll catch more before going back to camp." she was effectively shut up by the statement, despite how much she wanted to snip at her for speaking as such to her deputy, she couldn't bring herself to. instead, the ginger and white tabby wolfed down the rest of the water vole, her stomach happily accepting the meal. "...thank you, quickriver," she said softly, rising to her paws after a moment. "let's go."ooc: / tag: Minteh Freshness

Quickriver "...thank you, quickriver," Quickriver turned her head to look at Zinnianose. She glanced down to make sure the she-cat had eaten the piece of prey, and when she made sure she had, Quickriver nodded and got to her paws alongside the deputy. "let's go." She dipped her head and padded away. In the opposite direction of camp. Instead, she padded out of their territory and towards the neutral ground that was Fourtrees. She set a pace that wouldn't really allow them to speak much, but not so quick that Zinnianose wouldn't be able to keep up in her state. All they had to do was follow the dirt path to Fourtrees. Quickriver glanced over her shoulder a couple times, making sure the ginger she-cat was still behind her. Quickriver slowed down to a walk as they reached the edge of the clearing. Fourtrees was just ahead. Her ears twitched and she flicked the tip of her tail before padding between two of the giant oaks and towards the Highrock. There, she sat below it and stared upwards. It was so much different in the daytime. Everything was golden and colorful rather than silver and muted. "I know you normally aren't fond of me, and sometimes the feeling is reciprocated." She kept her gaze on the sky she could see above them and took a deep breath. "But I thought you might feel the need to be closer to Starclan. And this was the second best place since Highstones is too far away." She turned her bronze gaze with those onyx colored pupils on the ginger and white deputy. Her eyes and face were serious. Always serious. "Take your time and talk with them, even if they don't talk back they will always be here for us." Even those of us who are half-clan. Those of us who don't quite belong. She added the last part in her head and stood up. "I'll be back by the path if you need me." Quickriver dipped her head to the warrior she-cat and turned to leave. The two of them might not see eye to eye, even if it was just because of Quick's heritage, but she would hope that even an idiot like Ashcloud would do something like this for her if she were ever to be in Zinnianose's position. riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputyginger ears flicked and swiveled, listening to the quiet whispers of the stream as she trailed alongside quickriver. she could sense the tension hanging in the air, from a single thread of spider web - so delicate, so fragile and weak, if any word were spoken it would break. she chose to stay silent and simply walked, the serenity of their surroundings keeping her calm. this is much better than at camp, zinnianose realized, and began to relax slightly. she lifted her gaze from her paws and saw the fourtrees coming into view. through her peripheral vision she gave quickriver a quizzical look, endless questions beginning to run through her head as she debated speaking up. in the end, she decided not to, putting a rather large amount of trust in her half-clan clanmate in respecting her decisions. they came between two of the great oaks, and then before the highrock. it seemed dull here. "i know you normally aren't fond of me, and sometimes the feeling is reciprocated," quickriver began, and zinnianose immediately flattened her ears. she was ready to back up and sprint out of there again. the last thing i need is to be around cats who don't like me, she thought desperately. "but i thought you might feel the need to be closer to starclan. and this was the second best place since highstones is too far away." wide, golden gleaming eyes blinked at the idea of coming to starclan, of all things, for help. it should have sounded stupid. it should have been the dumbest idea she'd ever heard. but it was brilliant.
"take your time and talk with them, even if they don't talk back they will always be here for us. i'll be back by the path if you need me." she saw quickriver rise back to her paws and turn to go. zinnianose turned to face her, her eyes wide in impeccable shock, inexplicable gratitude. why are you doing this for me if you don't even like me? she cried out in her head, digging her claws into the cold earth, hard from leaf-bare. the riverclan deputy hesitated, leapt up onto the highrock, then sat down, her round eyes looking up to the stars, to silverpelt. the stars reflected in her eyes, glittering and gleaming like minnows in shallow water. in the twoleg-place, the stars were not visible. starclan was absent, unreachable, and she had been helpless. "starclan," she whispered, "i can't blame you for what happened to me. no matter how badly i want to. but i - i was terrified. i couldn't find you, i didn't have anyone with me in the twoleg-place. i didn't expect it to be so terrifying. there were so many dogs, and they're so vicious, i - you know. you had to have seen what happened, right?" she trailed off. there was a dull pain in her flank - a spot where she'd been bitten by a dog without a twoleg. she hadn't yet seen sharpberry about the wound. there was too much going on for her to quite gather herself just yet. "i don't want to be alone like that again. my clan, they - they don't know how badly i need them, starclan, they really don't. we take for granted the ability you have given us to live as a clan, we don't really appreciate it until... until we lose it." zinnianose swallowed, flattening her ears. "we take for granted our friends..." palestar, "until we lose them, too."zinnianose fell silent for a moment, simply watching silverpelt. "i wonder, if you can even hear me. thank you for sending those loners to guide me home. i know they were unkind, but they brought me home to riverclan. to my family. to palestar." her throat caught on the name of her closest friend, and she ducked her head, don't cry. you won't cry anymore today. enough.she rose to her paws. "i'm home now," she said to herself, "and riverclan needs me." with that, the ginger and white tabby leapt down to the ground. the frost-bitten grass cushioned her paws, and, carrying her head a little higher than before, she made her way back over to quickriver. zinnianose stopped before the golden-brown tabby, her expression carefully blank as her eyes flicked about the other she-cat's face. then, she spoke. "thank you," zinnianose said, cautious not to let her voice waver. "i.. i really didn't know how much i needed that. so, thanks."ooc: zinzin trying not to be super friendly even though she's so grateful x3 like "i - i totally still dislike you but maybe just maybe you're a little bit cool but not really just maybe" tag: Minteh Freshness

Quickriver Quickriver padded back to the path and sat down between the two oak trees. She looked back once, to see the ginger she-cat had leaped up onto the highrock. It didn't look like the fragile looking she-cat needed any help so the small warrior turned away and focused on the area outside of Fourtrees. She wouldn't doubt it if rogues and loners came through here. It was the one spot surrounded by all clans that no one owned. But she was certain those cats wouldn't realize the importance of this place. And while she wouldn't want to fight anyone here, as it was forbidden, she would if she had to. Her clanmate, no matter how much of a jerk she was to half-clan cats like Quickriver, still wasn't in battle shape. Which meant the brown tabby she-cat would have to do her best to keep her deputy safe. Everything was quiet, even after a long time, but Quickriver still kept her guard up, even glancing back at Zinnianose to make sure the she-cat was still there and alright. If someone slipped past her and got to Zinnianose, she knew Palestar would never forgive her. She'd probably even throw Quickriver out of Riverclan. Then where would she go? It's not like she had any other family. Her father said her loner mother had died from a fox attack so there was really no where else to go and Quickriver didn't want to leave Riverclan. Even if she didn't quite fit in here, it was the only home she had known and she certainly wouldn't fit in any better out there. Pawsteps sounded behind her and Quickriver leaped to her paws, ready to fight, but paused when she realized it was just Zinnianose. She sheathed her claws and his her fangs as she looked at the ginger and white she-cat. A little jolt went through her as she realized this wasn't the Zinnianose that had come back to them after her disappearance. No, this Zinnianose looked more like the one from before her disappearance. And while she was happy to see her back to what was possibly her old self, she also tensed up some. This was the cat that disliked half-clan cats, even if they were her loyal clanmates. She guarded herself, getting ready for anything. "thank you, i.. i really didn't know how much i needed that. so, thanks." While the words were kind, her voice was back to being indifferent towards Quick. She could barely catch the hint of gratitude in the pale she-cat's voice. And she knew then that they would go back to how they used to be, but possibly with not as much hostility. Quickriver's bronze eyes flickered on Zinnianose's face for a moment more before bowing her striped head and then turning away, back towards their territory. Back towards camp and their clanmates. "Let's get back. I still have more hunting to do." The golden brown tabby set off, not caring if Zinnianose moved to take the lead or stayed behind her or to the side of her. It didn't matter to her so long as the deputy returned safely so Quickriver could keep her hide. Words || 555 Ooc || That describes their relationship so well. x3 Tagged || iero

riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputyzinnianose was still somewhat tired, but she could feel her energy coming back to her after the meal quickriver had given her. she watched her expression change as she spoke, guilt starting to build up again as she saw quickriver put up a guarded expression. her whiskers twitched into a faint frown. maybe those rogues were right. i am a fox-heart. she shook the thought away, wanting to stay at ease. quickriver dipped her head to her, then turned away. "let's get back. i still have more hunting to do." she nodded effortlessly, and as quickriver began walking, she pushed herself to walk alongside her. we don't have to hate each other, she thought fiercely at the other warrior, briefly wishing that quickriver could hear her thoughts. i don't approve of how you came to be. i don't like your blood muddling in with my clan. but you've been kind to me. we don't have to be at each other's throats.
"i... could help, if you'd like?" zinnianose suggested somewhat timidly. she wasn't exactly sure if she would be able to keep up and hunt more than a mere morsel of a mouse or a squirrel, but the sooner she returned to her warrior duties, the quicker she would readjust to clan life. "the fresh-kill pile was looking a little sparse, anyways..." she hurried to add, not wanting to seem desperate. if i can just keep out of camp a little longer... just a little bit.ooc: / tag: Minteh Freshness

Quickriver "i... could help, if you'd like?" Quickriver turned her head to look at the ginger she-cat by her side. Before she could say anything, the older she-cat hurried on. "the fresh-kill pile was looking a little sparse, anyways..." Her golden brown eyes looked Zinnianose over for a moment before she turned her head back to look at where she was going, thinking. "I...guess if you feel up to it. Two pairs of claws are better than one, I guess. But I'm not taking the blame if Palestar get's angry. There was a warning note in her voice and she was dead serious. Palestar more than likely wouldn't get really angry at Zinnianose, and would instead take her anger out on Quickriver. She probably should send the other she-cat back to camp, but she was the deputy. Only the leader could really order a deputy to do something. An Quickriver was by far not the leader of Riverclan. She wouldn't take responsibility for not sending the pale she-cat back, but if something was to happen to Zinnianose, she would own up to it in an instant. The tabby glanced over at the ginger and white she-cat, looking for her reaction. "I'm headed towards Windclan's border where there might be more land prey, past Druid's Leap. riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputy zinnianose could barely listen to quickriver, the antsy-like feeling she thought she'd shook off in her soliloquy to starclan slowly beginning to return. she flashed the brown tabby a somewhat quizzical look, cocking her head. "but i'm not taking the blame if palestar get's angry." the ginger and white she-cat wrinkled her nose, her whiskers twitching.
"why would palestar get angry?" she said softly. "it's not like i'm going to get hurt going for a little hunt." then, zinnianose paused. she was rather out of shape for hunting in leaf-bare.
"i'm headed towards windclan's border where there might be more land prey, past druid's leap. but if i don't find much there i'm going back to the river to fish. you can stay with me for however long you like so long as we don't get in one another's way." zinnianose withheld any facial reaction that she would make at the end commentary, and instead let the hurt sink in inside. if she expressed any displeasure... starclan, she'd probably make the situation worse.
stop being so needy, she told herself angrily. you're out of the twoleg-place. you don't need to rely on other cats anymore. quickriver doesn't want to hear anything from you, anyways. you heard her. she doesn't like you. zinnianose shook her head, sighing.
"i wouldn't take a chance in going fishing," she declared, trying to make herself sound as orderly and put-together as possible. "the water is freezing. you'd get sick before you caught anything. if... if we can't find anything by the border, we're better off just getting back to camp. there's no shame in coming back preyless every now and then. it's bound to happen at some point."

Quickriver "why would palestar get angry? it's not like i'm going to get hurt going for a little hunt." Quickriver glanced over at Zinnianose, a half-way incredulous expression on her face. Had all that time being away from the clan made her daft? With a deep sigh she spoke. "She cares for you. Like, really, extremely, cares for you. Anyone can see it. And she just got you back. She'd probably skin me alive and throw me out of the clan if you so much as got a cold or a twisted paw or a wrenched claw." She shook her head slightly and turned back to facing where she was walking. They were close to the bridge now. She had fallen back into thought of all the prey animals that could be out. Perhaps they would get lucky and catch one of the few stray rabbits that had burrows on their side of the gorge. "i wouldn't take a chance in going fishing, the water is freezing. you'd get sick before you caught anything. if... if we can't find anything by the border, we're better off just getting back to camp. there's no shame in coming back preyless every now and then. it's bound to happen at some point." Quickriver could tell it was an order. But there was no way she was coming back empty pawed. She flattened her ears to her head and dropped her head, pushing her shoulders up, making the already small tabby look even smaller. "Not for full blooded clan cats like you maybe. She half mumbled, half growled, under her breath and picked up her pace. She'd already talked about being half clan with Palestar on an earlier patrol with Ashcloud, Bearpaw, and Splashpool. And she didn't really want to do it again. Palestar thought things were all fine and dandy, that it shouldn't matter so long as the cat was loyal and a good warrior, but not everyone thought that way. Not everyone saw how good of a warrior she was, how loyal she was. All they saw was her muddied blood. She was a stain, a taint, on their clan and nothing she did could make them see otherwise. Quickriver had always thought Zinnianose to be a cat in between those two. One who didn't like that she was only half Riverclan, but was somewhat okay with it so long as she was loyal. There was nothing she could do to show the whole clan that she was more loyal and hardworking than everyone else, not even if she became leader, though she had never wanted that. Not even for a split second had she ever wanted to be leader. She felt she would be judged more than she already was, if she were to lead Riverclan. And she didn't need that kind of pressure. She was already trying to run herself into the ground to catch more prey than anyone else, to fight the hardest in battles, to take marking the border seriously. She had no extra time other than to sleep because she was constantly trying to show to everyone that she belonged here. Quickriver shook her head to shake off her thoughts, and with ears still pinned back, sped up slightly. Words || 556 Ooc || Oops, we're getting deep here. xD Tagged || iero

riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputy "she cares for you. like, really, extremely, cares for you. anyone can see it. and she just got you back. she'd probably skin me alive and throw me out of the clan if you so much as got a cold or a twisted paw or a wrenched claw," quickriver said, sounding almost condescending to the deputy. her eyes widened at the comment, unsure how to read her tone, unsure how to respond to it. before she'd been taken, she likely would've snapped right back. in the twoleg-place, that kind of commentary was typical, to be expected, surprising if not given. she had cowered at the sound of another's voice in the alleyways, tried to hide and mask her scent in dirtied puddles on the sides of thunderpaths. now - what could she do?
however, her words also left a strange twist in zinnianose's stomach. "like, really, extremely, cares for you. anyone can see it." she slowed down her pace, the words echoing back and forth in her mind, tossing and turning the possibilities of what quickriver could have meant. before she had even realized it, she was saying, "i highly doubt she cares that much." it was only after that zinnianose wished she hadn't said it, wished she had just eaten her words instead of thrown them up. her gut wrenched when she felt some truth behind the statement, there's no way she cares that much. then, zinnianose pricked her ears, picking up the sound of quickriver's voice but not quite catching what she said.
"if that was any protest, i don't want to hear it. we're not hunting in the river." zinnianose looked up, and gawked a little at how much further ahead of her quickriver had gotten. she had slowed down while quickriver had sped up! the deputy pushed herself to keep up, but her strides didn't get much faster. she wouldn't admit she was tired, even if her breath was beginning to catch. "we'll go by barley's farm if we don't find anything by the border, if you're so insistent on catching something. besides, the faster we catch something, the faster you can get away from me." her tone wasn't laced with venom as it usually would be - more or less a succumbing tone, quiet and giving in, almost hurt, but not quite so.

Quickriver "i highly doubt she cares that much." Quickriver could feel the incredulous look she gave Zinnianose, all throughout her body. It made her pause as she looked back at the other she-cat. "You've got to be kidding me right now, right?" She shook her head and continued on. "You must have bees in your brain if you believe that. Maybe some little minnows swimming around in there too." Quickriver rolled her eyes and shook her head. How could one cat be so stupid? And a deputy no less. She hadn't realized just how far she'd gotten from the other she-cat until she heard Zinnianose's voice, several fox lengths behind her. She hadn't been going that fast, had she? With a sigh, she slowed down some and flicked her ears back to hear the rest of what the deputy was saying. "we'll go by barley's farm if we don't find anything by the border, if you're so insistent on catching something. besides, the faster we catch something, the faster you can get away from me." Barley's Farm. Yeah, that might not be a too terrible idea. There should be at least some mice hanging around there, or something right? It wasn't fish, but not everyone in the clan liked fish, plus it would be better than nothing. "Fine." She huffed. It would appear her deputy was not going to budge on that, though the little golden-brown tabby could fish some other day, when she wasn't with Zinnianose. "Fine. Let's work on finding some prey then. At least I can focus with you, unlike some of the other warriors in our clan. Like Ashcloud. That trout-head." Her fur spiked up a little at the thought of him and all she wanted to do was hiss and spit, but that wouldn't do any good. Finally, they were passing back over the bridge and she sped back up, having never liked the feel of it on her paws. It was somewhat like a thunderpath, only it didn't bite into her paws as much. It just didn't feel natural. As soon as she was over the bridge, she slowed back down and perked her ears, listening for any prey animals that may be nearby. It would be nicer if they could catch something without having to go all the way to the more moorland-like part of their territory. While she did like the feel of the springy grass under her paws, it wasn't like the feel of the marsh. Quickriver parted her mouth, hoping the wind would blow a fresh prey scent to her. Words || 427 Ooc || At least she doesn't hate Zinnia as much as she hates Ashcloud at the moment lol Though sadly Quick and Ash won't be able to get on better terms since Tundra left. =/ Tagged || iero

riverclan ❀ zinnianose ❀ deputy "you've got to be kidding me right now, right?" zinnianose snapped her head up from staring at her paws, her eyes narrowing. quickriver had been full of sharp remarks the entire time they'd been together, and though she knew things had always been somewhat like this between them, she was starting to get fed up with it. "you must have bees in your brain if you believe that. maybe some little minnows swimming around in there too."
zinnianose opened up her mouth to protest, but quickly clamped it shut, gritting her teeth. her head was swimming enough already - with fatigue, with relief, with irritability - she didn't need to go off and get herself into a fight her first full day back. be the bigger cat, zinnianose, she told herself, then added with a glimmer of amusement, morally, not just physically.
"fine. fine. let's work on finding some prey then. at least i can focus with you, unlike some of the other warriors in our clan. like ashcloud. that trout-head." on any other day, she would have been prone to agree. she had never liked ashcloud much, on account of his heritage and general personality, but she couldn't quite find a reason to agree with the she-cat this time.
"i know he's a mousebrain, but... what did i miss?" she said softly, then paused as well, her nose twitching as she scented the air for prey. the smell of mouse flooded her nostrils, and, desperate as she wanted to catch it, she knew quickriver wouldn't let them get back to camp without a morsel of prey. zinnianose decided to leave it in her paws to catch it, hoping that it would be enough to satisfy the other she-cat's needs.
